iePlexus Social Media News Brief: Dec. 30, 2009

From Facebook dominating Google, to Twitter’s co-founder making a tremendous prediction, here’s a look at some of the stories making headlines this week, in the social media world.

Facebook hit a major milestone on Christmas.  Hitwise announcedvia Twitter this week, that for the first time ever, Facebook was the number one most visited site in the US, beating out Google’s spot which they have dominated for years.  Experts say that Facebook users wanted to connect with their friends and family to wish them a Merry Christmas. They also say that this will not be Facebook’s last time take that spot from Google.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, predicted Sunday in a Times Online artcle that “In the new year, Twitter will begin supporting a billion search queries a day.”  Stone supports his statement by saying Twitter is no longer a social network or microblog service, it’s now a “real-time information network,” for people to share information and news from around the globe.  As of right now an average of 27 millions tweets are sent out each and every single day.

And finally as the year comes to a close, it’s always fun to take a look back at what happened this year.
