Twitter is all about change this week. Yesterday the company announced they will begine to add advertisements known as “Promoted Tweets” to the site. Today the company is answering the question that’s been on everyone’s mind for years. “How many people are actually on Twitter?”
Twitter CEO Biz Stone announced at the companies first developer conference, Chirp, that the site has exactly 105,779,710 users. Obviously that number has jumped since this morning, but that’s about a third of the US population and about 25% of Facebook’s population. I always talk about how if Facebook were it’s own nation, it’s population would be larger than the United States. But obviously, not every American is on Facebook. So what would happen if we took just the American’s on Facebook and compared that to the actual US population.
This morning, Mashable published an interesting Infograph. Muhammad Saleem provided the graphic, which show that about a third of all American’s are on the social network. While of course, most of the numbers are estimates, it’s fun to take a look at. (more…)

Just the other week, we told that if Facebook were a nation, it’s population would be much larger than the United States. While that remains true, Facebook’s population seems to be exploding. Late last night, Facebook CEO & Founder Mark Zuckerberg had sent out an open letter to all of it’s users. While we reported less than a month ago, that Facebook had 325 million users, Zuckerberg officially announced the site has more than 350 million users. That is a tremendous increase just within the past month alone.
Facebook has seen it’s number’s grow drastically this year, more than doubling in population. Taking a look back, in August of 2008, the popular social networking site had just 100 million users. It then took nearly 5 months for Facebook to gain 50 million users. Since then, the site has grown on average 50 million users every 3-4 months. This year alone, Facebook has gained 200 million users, and there are no signs of slowing down. (more…)
If Facebook were a country, it would become the world’s third most populated — surpassing the United States by more than 18 million. While having more than 325 million users worldwide is impressive, it’s how fast Facebook is growing that is making headlines.

In September, Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg announced that the social-networking site had hit 300 million users.
